Brief History

Description and concept

Setsuko Chiba is an award winning artist who creates metaphorical, poetic, allegorical and narrative works which explore and shed light on such the eternity in a moment, the blend of macrocosms and microcosmos, contemplating existence, restoring identity and humanity, strengthening resilience and fostering healthy coexistence with the environment, with vibrant colors, symbolistic and surrealistic ways. Her work has been exhibited at venues such as the Luminous Eye Gallery established by the Minneapolis Museum in Athens, Greece, Gallery angle in Paris, France, Kodak Gallery in Tokyo, Japan, 'Art Night Venezia', organized and coordinated by Venezia Open Art, Venezia Ca' Foscari University in collaboration with the Municipality of Venice and Veneto Region in Italy, Gallery of ICAM in Geneva, Switzerland (6-30 May 2026), organized by the artistic and cultural association Coloriel l'Avenir, in partnership with ICAN International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (Nobel Peace Prize 2017) and so on, and some international prominent online galleries. At the same time, it has been published in magazines and book in Germany, in Italy, in USA, in Canada, in Turkey and Germany (31 October 2025), and in Tokyo, among others. She is also an award winning poet and author, too. Her practice crosses the realms of literature, performance, photography, writing and contemporary art, and has its own unique style and artistic spirit and philosophy. Setsuko has won awards in Japan once for poetry and five times for visual arts, and has been a shortlist abroad, once in the UK and twice in the US for visual art, as well as being awarded the third place winning, with a Certification of Artistic Excellence and an Honourable Mention in the UK. In addition to them, four more awards in Turkey have been put in her artistic journey. She began her career as a poet and artist in New York and established her theatrical and contemporary art poetry performance world in Tokyo. Her documentaries have been broadcast on TV, and also articles about her were published in many other media. In the meanwhile, she spent many years modelling for photographic and literary projects. The works have been exhibited in some prestigious galleries, art festivals and some prominent magazines, including international fashion magazines in Milan, Italy. Her new practical philosophy book, which is published under a pen name in Tokyo, May 2025, reached number one in a category on a biggest major domestic e-commerce site's sales chart, successfully achieving this position within two weeks of publication.

Recent work and Contemporary Surrealistic Elegance

Setsuko Chiba's recent visual art series, Planetary Inner Self, is a journey in dialogue with her ‘inner self’(

or our 'inner selves'), which she encounters through the fusion of heritage of human culture and the beauty of the nature. It is a visualization of her philosophical aesthetics based on the life and the universe as taught by cutting-edge astrophysics, the Lotus Sutra, the highest philosophy from the East, and the poetry that expresses beauty, truth, love and hope. And through its creation she participates in today's world with its many challenges.

Having spent her life influenced by the cultures of different countries and the rich wilderness, what is different from herself, or what she does not have, is the discovery of a new self, a dialogue with, appreciation of and respect for the profound universe of life. And at the same time it explores and represents the philosophy that ‘humanity has the same components as the stars of the universe’ as the above thoughts .

Setsuko, on the other hand, uses clouds as a motif to explor the human psychology, emotion, past (or the ancient times) and future of humanity, endless possibility and inherent resilience through her series such as Cloud with Door, Cloud with Chair and Cloud Story.

These attempts at new visual art series are described as contemporary surrealistic elegance in comparison to her previous ‘visualization of the language of clouds’ such as 'Cloud9 in the 7th heaven'.

It means that she is one of those poets who knows that what happens in the world of life, and life itself, as well as beauty itself, as well as the truth itself, is an organic, productive, surrealistic entity.

Humanitarian and Environmental approach

Soon after graduating from Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, Setsuko took part in tree-planting activities to stop desertification in Africa with her longtime friend, NIRA Grand Prize-winning economist and professor of Graduate School, The University of Tokyo, Nobuhiko Fuwa.

At the same time, she also became interested in refugee issues, visited a Cambodian refugee camp in Thailand and wrote an article about it, which was widely covered by a major newspaper, and began working as a busy journalist and essayist.

Early activities, Poetry and Performance poetry

She then moved to New York, where she made her debut as a poet and artist. She encountered three luminaries who influenced her, such as beat generation poet Allen Ginsberg, photographer Robert Frank who has left his significant mark on the history of world photography and Whitney Museum curator Thom Donovan. Her early artistic activities in NY were sometimes concerned with Livington School founder, art director and photographer Toyo Tsuchiya who was an iconic artist in East Village, but her artist life was effectively directed and influenced by Thom Donvan in her earliest career. Meanwhile, she continued to correspond with Robert Frank through exchange of letters and was asked to do as his interpreter during his major retrospective exhibition at Yokohama Museum of Fine Arts in Japan. She performed at many influential places in NY, for example, La Ma Ma Galleria, Collective Unconsciousness, Club Bob, Gallery128, St. Marks Church and so on.

Setsuko released CDs of poetry collections with music in Japanese, French and English in Tokyo and Paris, collaborated with such improvising and experimental musicians who have contributed to the development and potential of progressive music for many years, Hoppy Kamiyama and Jean-François Pauvros. Her first collection of poems on it was made especially with the tremendous cooperation of the editor, Kotarou Kobayashi who had run a gallery in Tokyo.

Meanwhile she established her own unique performance world of poetry, in combining elements of theatre and contemporary art in Tokyo. In particular, she made it through presenting a series of "Setsuko Chiba Poetry Live/ Deep Night of Loving" for five years, with the aim of contributing to the development of poetry as a visual art form.

The good audiences for her performances included many cultural figures. Like an international collection model and actress Sayoko Yamaguchi, prestigious doctor Hiroyuki Suematsu, French chef who became the international youngest silver medalist Mitsuru Hayano, dancer Sabrou Teshigawara, the chief juror of Mimei Ogawa literature contest prize and poet Hideharu Ogawa, bestselling writers Nagisa Tatsumi and Yutarou Oka, and a famous curator of Phtography Motoki Tsuda, etc.

The 45minutes documentary program featuring her "Angel Setsuko Chiba" aired on Perfect TV, showcasing her activities. She had also been featured in major newspapers, magazines, and progressive media by the cultural journalists who are interested in the poets and artists who had expressed themselves in revolutionary and avant garde ways, including a French critic and professor Laurent Jullier.

Visual art and Cloud 9 in the 7th Heaven

Meanwhile, she has been creating and presenting mixed media artworks that use clouds and other aspects of nature as motifs and through them convey the awaking of inner transformation and resilience, the value of the dignity and possibilities of life, environmental issues, peace and love, which have been presented in national and international media and galleries, especially through one of her projects, ' Cloud9 in the 7the Heaven'.

At the same time, she had developed another visualizing poetry project Setsuko Icon/POETGRAPHOLLIA, with a photographer Kiyoshi Ikejiri who contributed to inovation of photography for many years; worked in London and published photo books in Tokyo and Le Harvre. It explored the world of art and literature at the intersection of poetry and photography. She had been modelling for his aesthetic photos, performed, created mixed media installations and written the poems. It was presented in influential galleries and magazines of literature and visual art both nationally and internationally, including gallery mole, Studio Ebisu, isis, eye style international magazine directed by Cristina Frasca who has been an international award-winning editor in Milan, Japan Camera, and DRUG magazine for art and literature; which was directed by Tatsuyuki Yokokawa who is a photographer and editor. Especially it had been serialized for DRUG for many years. Setsuko Icon/POETGRAPHOLLIA was an invited exhibition by Yokohama Triennale for The Citizen in 2015.

Serialization, Contribution and publication

She has contributed and serialized her work to various media since her earliest career. Among them, "Alice's Mirror," which was serialized in one of the largest major newspapers in Japan, was always ranked among the most popular by readers. Meanwhile, she serialized poems in avant-garde and core culture magazines for many years. Ones of her poems serialized in one of those magazines later became her first CD poetry collections.

In 2021, she also contributed "Pandora's Will Mother Left" to poetry collections by poets from 52 countries (USA), with a third of the publication's proceeds designed to benefit the world's healthcare workers and the needy in the COVID pandemic disaster. The work is the 26th poem to be published abroad in print.

In 2023, Songs for which she wrote the lyrics were registered with the United States Copyright Office.

She published a practical philosophy book was published under a pen name in 2025. It reached number one in a category on a biggest major domestic e-commerce site's sales chart, successfully achieving this position within two weeks of publication. National Diet Library Japan, and also some official libraries stock the book. The positive recognition of a city's educational congree has also decided to provide twenty schools there with the book in October 2025.

Brief History in Japanese

詩人・現代美術家・パフォーマンスポエト・モデル・作家

青山学院大学卒業。毎日新聞特集版編集部記者を経て、ＮＹで詩人・アーティストとしてデビュー後、パリで活動。帰国後、ポエトリーパフォーマンスの世界を展開し、演劇的な表現力とオーディオヴィジュアルなテクノロジーを含めたマルチモーダルな手法で文学の空間芸術化や、哲学の視覚芸術化に寄与すると同時に、デジタルアートやインスタレーションなどミクストメディアな現代美術を制作し、発表する。イタリアやアメリカをはじめ、国内外のメディアに寄稿。

Poetry and Performance Poetry

審美的な詩作と演劇的な表現力で詩を視聴覚芸術化したステージパフォーマンスで注目され、ＴＶ出演の他、国内外の多数のメディアに取り上げられる。

デビュー当時、NYのパフォーマンス会場に訪れた元ホイットニー美術館のキュレーターでアートディレクターのトム・ドノヴァンに激賞され、４時間に及ぶインタビューの末、氏が寄稿するメディアに活動を報じる記事が掲載される。後日、ドノヴァンにより、ビートニクスの伝説的詩人、アレン・ギンズバーグを紹介される。リヴィングトン・スクールの創立者、クラブ、No Se Noのオーナーでもあった写真家、アーティスト、アートディレクターのトヨ・ツチヤは、当時、アメリカにおける活動のディレクターであった。NYで出会った20世紀を代表する写真家、ロバート・フランクとは、同氏のブリーカーストリートの自宅に招かれた後、横浜美術館における大回顧展の際に通訳を兼ねて日本で再会し、文通を通して交流を続けた。

パリの初ライヴ直後、「パリの武道館」、ゼニットに、現地の国際的に活動するジャン・フランソワ・ポヴォロスと、パリのホームレス救済のためのチャリティーコンサートにコラボレーション出演し、アフリカのテレビ局のインタビュー番組に報じられる。一方、当時、グルノーヴル大学の美学部教授でもあった評論家、ローラン・ジュリエから国際交流基金パリ支局を通じて取材の申し出があり、同氏により、フランスのアート誌、「レヴュー・エ・コリジェ」に作品と活動内容が大きく報じられる。NYにおける活動は、読売新聞アメリカ版やアメリカのNippon Clubのニュースレターにおいて報道される。およそ４０分のドキュメンタリー番組【天使・千葉節子】（パーフェクTV）で、「ボードレールの再来」と、作風が評される。

ＮＹのラ・ママ・ラ・ギャラリア公演、セントマークス・チャーチ、ニューヨリカン・ポエトリーカフェ、ギャラリー・ボブ、コレクティブ・アンコンシャスネス、在パリ日本大使館公演、フランスのナントアートフェスティバル招待公演、香港ミディムエイジア招待公演、東京アップリンク・ファクトリー、横浜関内小ホールなど、各地でポエトリーリーディングのアートパフォーマンスを重ねる。パフォーマンス会場には、モデルで女優の山口小夜子や舞踏家の勅使河原三郎などの著名な文化人たちも訪れた。特に、アップリンクファクトリーにおいては、「千葉節子ポエトリーライヴ/愛することの深き夜」の連続公演を５年間に渡り行い、詩の視聴覚芸術化の発展に寄与することを目的に、自らのパフォーマンスポエトリーの世界を確立した。横浜ジャズフェスティバルにおいては、フランス年であったことから、フランス人のコラボレーターと共にフランス代表のカテゴリーにおいて参加した。

第一詩集「夢魔の庭」、パリで制作発表された第二詩集「Mango Man-Go」（共に英仏語訳付）は、自らの声と日本語によるリーデイングアートによるＣＤの形式をとり、音楽は、ホッピー神山やジャン・フランソワ・ポヴォロスなど、それぞれ日本とフランスのプログレッシヴシーンを長年代表する実力派アーティストたちが参加し、プロドュ―スした。又、「夢魔の庭」のデザイン、制作、デレクションは編集者でギャラリストの小林小太郎が担い、「Mango Man-Go」においては、ジャン・マルク・フォサ、そして、セシル・ラコンブがデザインに携わった。

ART

インナートランスフォーメーション、エコロジー、サステナヴル、レジリエンス、の４つをコンセプトに、輝き、美、やすらぎ、活力、幸せ、平和を目的とするコンテンポラリーアートに携わる。

東日本大震災、そして、闘病生活をきっかけに、空と雲と光をモティ―フにしたクラウドアートをスタートし、２０１８年に「日仏友好１６０周年ジャポニスム２０１８」の正式参加事業として、パリのギャラリ―・ド・アングルにより招待。在パリの受賞歴画家、Tomoko・K・Oberとコラボレーション展を行い、元フランス２テレビの国際ジャーナリスト、ジャン・マニアンのオンライン番組に放映される。

クラウドアートにおける作品は、２０２２年、英国アルパイン芸術財団主催の国際コンクールのヴィジュアルアート部門において、２０００人のエントリーの中からショートリステドアーティストに選ばれる。

２０２４年１月、アメリカの国際プロジェクト、「ジ・インターナショナル・ルーツ・プロジェクト」の、６人の作家の作品を紹介するプラットフォームのランディングページに、作品、「ゴールデンエンブレイス」が掲載される。

２０２４年４月、クラウドアートのプロジェクト、「Cloud9 in the 7th Heaven」の作品2点が、ギリシャの首都、アテネのアクロポリス博物館が設立したギャラリー、ルミナス・アイにおける国際美術展、「真我のオデッセイ / ドン・キホーテの父、ミゲロ・セルバンテスの命日を記念する」、の審査で選ばれ、フィジカルとオンラインの両方で展示。その永久保存版のカタログ本に掲載される。

同シリーズの作品は、２０２４年５月、英国ドアドムギャラリー・国際アートプライズにおいてサードプレイスアーティストに。オナラブル・メンションと芸術的卓越性の証明書が贈られる。同年８月、アメリカのアトランタが拠点であるアエドラ・ファインアート・国際芸術展に作品が選ばれる。２０２５年、トルコ共和国「ルーメンアートギャラリー国際コンテスト」クラティオ・マグナ賞、並びに、イマージング・ヴィオトュル―ソ賞を受賞する。

２０２５年、イタリアのヴェネツィアにおいて、１８６８年に設立された国立ヴェネツィア・カ・フォスカリ大学がヴェネチア市およびヴェネト州と共同で企画・運営する「アートナイト・ヴェネツィア」におけるヴェネツィア・オープンアート・アソシエーション主催による国際展覧会「アート・フォー・ザ・プラネット」の審査に、地球環境をテーマにした作品、「トゥディズベッドルーム・トゥモローズベッドルーム」が選ばれ、ヴェネツィアの歴史地区の文化的中心地、ドルソドゥーロに同年６月２１日より７月２０日迄展示される。

２０２５年、１０月末、トルコ共和国とドイツにおける「「コンテンポラリーアート・マスターストローク・アンヴェイルドゥ／ヴォイス・アンド・ヴィジョン┃アートブック2025」に作品８点が選ばれ、特集ページにロングインタヴューと共に掲載される。

２０２６年、５月６～３０日、スイス・ジュネーヴで行われる国際展、PROMEMORIA（SOSを発信する） - 「War : A Thing Never to Do（戦争：決してしてはならないこと）」に作品、「HIROSHIMA DRESS」が選ばれる（芸術文化団体「Colorier l’Avenir」が、ICAN（核兵器廃絶国際キャンペーン、2017年ノーベル平和賞受賞）、アラブ・地中海文化研究所（ICAM）- L’Olivier、およびジュネーブを拠点とするその他の文化、教育、慈善、国際機関との提携により開催）。

インスタレーションでは、東日本大震災直後、様々なマテリアルを用いた白い造形作品、ホワイトインスタレーションを制作。初めての作品、「立ち上がり、蘇る花たち」と「アフロディーテのハート」が、２０１２年およそ８０００人が応募したイタリアのアルテラグーナ国際コンクールのSNSで紹介される。

Modeling & Setsuko Icon/POETGRAPHOLLIA

写真と詩のコラボレーションプロジェクト、【Setsuko Icon/ POETGRAPHOLLIA】では、ロンドンで作家活動をし、日本とフランスで写真集を出版している写真家の池尻清の写真と共に、詩作とモデルに従事。
「日本カメラ」などの写真専門誌の他、独特な視点による写真表現でユニークな写真集を出版する写真家、横川辰之が主宰する写真と文学のカルチャー誌「ドルーク」に長期連載。イタリアはミラノの雑誌、「LYF」現オーナーであるクリスティナ・フラスカが編集長を務めた世界的なファッション誌のグラビア、「eye style international magazine」に、同業界としては異例の一年に渡る掲載の他、写真家、キュレーターの津田基が創業し、当時、写真の聖地と呼ばれたギャラリー・モール、スタジオ恵比寿、京都のギャラリー・イシス等の写真専門ギャラリーをはじめ、各地で発表を重ね、文学とヴィジュアルアートの融合の可能性と発展に従事する。
ギャラリー・モールにおけるSetsuko Icon/POETGRAPHOLLIAの際に、ポエトリー・パフォーマンスは最終日に行われたが、限定チケットは５千円という高額にも拘らず、発売開始当日内に売り切れた。
　又、２０１４年横浜市民のためのトリエンナーレには、招待展覧会として、横浜市中区にあるギャラリーShimizuにおいて「Setsuko Icon/POETGRAPHOLLIA～惑星天使２０１４」が開催された。

Writing

国内外の出版物やメディアに寄稿。
日本心身医学会名誉会長、元東京大学心療内科教授、現名古屋大学名誉教授、精神科医の末松弘行博士とのコラボレーション連載等に携わった。

美食エッセイ、イメージ・イーティングは、ロンドンのホテル・リッツでスーシェフを務め、史上最年少、２４歳の若さでフランス料理の国際コンクールのメダリストになった元都ホテル東京取締役総料理長、現西日本調理製菓専門学校校長、早野充シェフによる創作料理とのコラボレーション企画として、毎日グラフに好評連載された。

毎日新聞に長期連載時において担当編集者を務めたのは、同新聞社における名編集委員でミリオンセラーをプロドュ―スした福田淳、そして、後に、歴史小説のジャンルでベストセラー作家となった同じく編集委員の楠戸義昭であった。

２０２１年７月、アメリカの作家で出版社オーナー、リーア・デボラ・グラシーンがプロドュ―スした世界５２カ国の詩人による詩集、【Global Insides-vaccine】（U.S.A）に【Pandora's Will, Mother Left /パンドラの遺書、その母なる宇宙の永遠】を寄稿。同出版物の収益の３分の一は、世界の医療従事者とコロナ禍における生活困窮者への寄付を目的に企画された。同作品は、活字として海外で発表する２６番目の詩となる。

２０２３年、作詞を提供したポップ歌謡が、アメリカ合衆国著作権局に登録されることになり、詩人・アーティストとしてデビューした同じNYで作詞家デビューをする。

Activities

青山学院大学卒業直後、アフリカの砂漠化救済を目的にした植林活動に、後に、東京大学大学院教授でNIRA大来政策研究所賞を受賞した開発経済学者で長年の友人である不破信彦と共に参加。同時に人道問題に関心を持ち、日本国際ボランティア協会（JVC）の協力を得てタイのカンボジア難民キャンプを取材した記事が、毎日新聞特集版における最初の著名記事となった。

（不破信彦は、２０１８年２月に急逝後、その長年の国際貢献における業績を称えられ、不破賞が設立された）
